Newer tests for predicting heart risk
Apolipoprotein B
is a blood (plasma) test particularly for guaging risk in patients with METABOLIC SYNDROME The doctor will aim for a test level of 0.9 g/L.
Lipoprotein a predicts what patients need urgent intervention because of their at-risk status. A level of 30 mg/dL along with other abnormal lipoprotein profile measurements indicates urgency is required.
Homocysteine
C-reactive protein (High-sensitivity C-reactive protein, hs-CRP)
is an indicator of inflammation in the body. It may indicate many sources of inflammation, not just cardiovascular. Studies show that people with elevated hs-CRP are at increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, strokes, colon cancer.
Recently Oprah recommended flossing: gum inflammation may show as high hs-CRP and be a marker for heart disease. People who have gum disease have a higher incidence of hardening of the arteries. Possibly the germs that cause gum disease get into the bloodstream through the damaged gum tissue and set up inflammation in the arteries. Brushing the teeth and flossing lower the risk.
Aspirin is used to lower the risk of colon cancer and lowers hs-CRP.
Smoking cessation, exercise and alcohol all have effects on hs-CRP
Natural remedies: Flaxseed oil, niacin help hs-CRP.
Medications: Statins are helpful.
