What is Coenzyme Q10? Co-Q10 and hypertension Co-Q10 and Alzheimer's disease Co-Q10 and cancer Co-Q10 and heart disease Coenzyme Q10 and migraine
Coenzyme Q10 occurs naturally in the body. We make it ourselves. However we produce less as we age. Most children do not need Co-Q10.
Co Q10 has been found useful in chronic and degenerative diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, Parkinsons disease, cancer , diabetes, muscular dystrophies and AIDS.
Co-Q10 is necessary for the production of energy from sugar in the mitochondria of each cell. The mitochondria are the power houses of our body's cells.
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Rosenfeldt et al. did a megastudy of 12 clinical trials of coenzyme q10 used for hypertension and concluded that coenzyme q10 has the ability to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients by up to17/10: and that side effects are minimal.
Our comment: systolic BP dropped more significanly than the diastolic, possibly reflecting the prevalence of systolic hypertension in the aging population.
Alzheimer's disease.
Coenzyme Q10 helps memory as people age: it is helpful in Parkinson's disease, another degenerative brain disease associated with aging. Freiderik's Ataxia, another brain degenerative disease, sometimes responds also. So some doctors are using it in Alzheimers disease and research suggests it is helpful alng with other measures. Patients in these trials showed a slowing of progression of the disease.
Coenzyme Q10 and Cancer
Breat cancer sufferes have on average lower levels of Coenzyme Q10 in their blood. It is used in conjuction with other treatments and seems to have abeneficial effect as an adjunctive therapy.
