Huperzine is an alkaloid extracted from a moss. It is used in Chinese medicine. It has anticholinesterase activity similar to drugs used for Alzheimer's disease (galantamine-Razadyne, Reminyl, Nivalin: and donepezil- Aricept.)
Clinical trials have revealed that the active ingredient of huperzine -HUP A - produced significant improvements in memory deficiencies in the elderly and in Alzheimer's patients.
An ongoing trial (BRAINz) is being conducted in Austalia, Britain and Canada and has been reported as showing early sign of success. They are using a pellet of HUP A injected under the skin for slow release, and to avoid the problems of remembering to take the drug and to avoid stomach and bowel side effects.
